Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization is a process of improving the visibility of your website and to rank it high in search engines for a definite set of keywords. In other words, we can say that SEO is a process of ranking your website on the top of the search engines for a particular keyword in regard to thousands of search results.

Whenever, a user search for something on Google, Yahoo or any other search engine, he types a query and press ‘enter’. The search engine generates thousands of results related to your query, but normally we look upon few which rank on the top of the search engines, or if they are relevant to our search query. Ranking your website on the top of the search engine is possible through a technique known as Search Engine Optimization.

Search engine friendly website leads to higher search engine rankings, which results in increased website traffic and better conversions.

How does it Work?

Search engines are not humans, and therefore, we need to understand that the things which are viewed by humans cannot be viewed in the same way by search engines as they are text driven.

Initial step is crawling, where the search engines visit your website to see what is lying in it, which is done by software known as ‘crawler’ like Google bot, in the case of Google. Crawlers while crawling your website follows links from one page to another and index everything, which comes their way. Keeping in mind that there are millions and millions of pages online, crawler may take some time to visit again to your website if some additional pages or minor alterations have been made in your website.

Once the site is crawled, the next step is Indexing. Indexing generally means that the content of the page is identified through its text and expressions, which are stored in the database in relation to a particular keyword which can be retrieved later. The ranking of a website depends very much upon how your website has been indexed by the search engines because if your website is easily understandable to search engines, it will be ranked higher.

Whenever a user enters a search query, the search engine compare the search string with the indexed pages, but as there are millions of pages relevant to a search string, the page which is most likely relevant will be shown first i.e. the ranking of the page depends upon its relevancy to a particular search query.
